Apple has recently announced its new range of iPhones, giving potential buyers three new models to choose from. While the iPhone X might appear to be grabbing the lion’s share of the news headlines, what’s likely to account for the bigger share of the sales is most probably going to be iPhone 8, seen as an upgrade of the iPhone 7. So, the question that most people are asking is whether the iPhone 8 is really a better model compared to the 7? Below we compare the iPhone 7 with the iPhone 8.

Design Size & Features

The biggest change is seen in the weight dimensions, as the iPhone 8 is slightly 7% heavier. One subtle boost seen in the iPhone 8 is that it has stereo speakers that are 25% louder compared to the iPhone 7 with the earpiece being used by Apple for amplified audio. On the flipside, for the iPhone 8, the headphone is gone and the connecting method remains Lightning. As for the available finishes, the iPhone 8 actually has fewer colour options with only Gold, Silver, and Space Grey. Apple has ditched Jet Black and Rose Gold for the iPhone 8. It’s also worth pointing out noting that for both the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, Apple has now brought in a glass back making it somewhat more fragile compared to its predecessor

Performance

While the iPhone 7 arguably remains one the fastest smartphones today, the iPhone 8 is set to boost the lead already enjoyed by Apple. Compared to its predecessor, itself quite nippy, the iPhone 8 ought to be a bit nippier. While Apple hasn’t, as usual, dished out the detailed speed specs, it does claim that their 6-core, 64-bit processors will be faster by 25% compared to the iPhone 7’s A10 chip when operating on the performance cores, and a massive 70% faster when on the high-efficiency cores. Battery Performance & Charging Apple, by shrinking the processor has been able to pack more efficient transistors into a more compact space, boosting both phone performance and the battery life. According to Apple, you can look forward to a 50% charge from a brief 30 minutes of fast wired charging; something not possible from the majority of its Android rivals (notably OnePlus). This, in itself, is a dramatic improvement on their earlier iPhone models.

The Price

If you are on a restrictive budget or would rather not spend too much, the iPhone 8 is a compelling option, especially if you are currently on the iPhone 5 and 5S series. Not only does the iPhone 8 feature a display that is larger, but the camera, as well as the general responsiveness, is superior. Your still photos on the iPhone 8 will turn out as they do on the pricier iPhone X, superior to the iPhone 7.

Bottom-line

Understandably, 2017 will go down as the year of Apple’s iPhone X. However, with the cost of that iPhone now running into four figures and the ditching of the Touch ID, it’s realistic to suspect that many buyers will opt to go for the more familiar figure and features of the iPhone 8 instead. The sharper display, greater battery life, and the 8 Plus dual cameras make it the iPhone model to get if you are willing or can afford the higher price. But, the iPhone 8 will be this year’s most accomplished small design phone. Well, you may not be getting the latest design when it comes to the new iPhones in the market today, but the iPhone 8 certainly ranks high up there in terms of value and pure practicality. Choosing Between the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 8: Is the 8 really Better?
