Bella Rose Okojie studied Mass Communication at Redeemer’s University, Ogun State, and works as an on-air-personality, amongst other things. She is currently the host of the morning show on City FM 105.1, having been co-host on The Breakfast Show with Dan Foster on Inspiration FM 92.3 previously.
CN: What were you doing prior to radio presenting?
I was serving at AIT as an associate producer and voice over artist for a teenagers show called Youngworld on Raypower 100.5fm. I was also starting out with the crew at techcityng.com.
CN: How did you get your first job on radio?
I think the amazing people at Raypower took a chance on me. I went from recording voice over on a teens show to co-hosting the Ultimate Morning Show with Ambrose Somide on the Raypower Network. I really wanted to be on TV but the guys at Raypower were faster than the AIT guys. I was called upon and asked, how serious are you with this radio thing? I said well, quite serious and the next thing I am auditioned and given the job.
CN: What are your primary responsibilities at work?
Putting together information for the show; talking points, hot topics, etc. I also have to lay voice overs for promos and read the world news occasionally. I work the console as well and monitor engagement on social media.
CN: What skills must an aspiring broadcaster cultivate?
The ability to communicate and multi task. It is the singular most important thing. Communicate with every part of your body such that it does not affect your presentation. Also, because broadcasting is a highly intuitive profession, your brain is doing a million things at once; you should know how to carry on with as many things as possible at the same time. Thinking, talking, holding attention, being in control, etc. Also, learn how to morph into just about anything.
CN: What advice do you wish someone had given you as an undergraduate?
Do not be in a hurry. Just. Keep. Calm.
CN: What do you consider to be the best career decision you’ve ever made?
In the future, that would be packing all my stuff and traveling to Greece. Good for creativity, but for now, having a business of my own where I have at least 70% input.
CN: What are you doing when you’re not working at the radio station, apart from making absolutely hilarious skits?
I am editing web content for techcityng.com or creating video content or covering a tech event. I am also either working on content for rccgcocng.org or goofing around with my family. They are so tolerant of me!
CN: Have you ever considered a career in television or film?
Yes! Always wanted to be on TV in fact. I have a few short films in my kitty and I’m working on a lot more. Acting is and has always been my first love.
