If you do not know gospel reggae singer, Buchi, you may at least be familiar with the lyrics from his popular song, Mma Mma:
“The gospel is not for Sunday morning, Sunday morning alone…”
Buchi is an artiste, poet, writer and evangelist, and here are some things you might not know about him.

Did You Know?

  • Buchi obtained a BA degree in English Language and Literary Studies from the University of Lagos in 1986. He has a Masters degree in 1988 and took up an appointment to lecture alongside a PhD programme at the same school.
  • Disc jockeying was his favourite past time. His preoccupation took a new turn when reggae musician, Ras Kimono, invited him to join a team of deejays at a reggae nightclub situated on a docked vessel on the Marina, Lagos Island, called The Floating Bukka. Interestingly, he was able to combine his lecturing job during the day with his nighttime job as a deejay.
  • He was involved in a few dangerous misadventures some of which were cultism and a life of violence and drugs both as a student and as a young lecturer. His experiences as a cultist and eventual recovery gave birth to the book Cease Fire!, and the “Operation Ceasefire”, project where he employs the use of music, lectures, focused group discussions (FGDs), dance, drama etc in the fight against cult violence among students, especially in tertiary institutions.
  • Buchi Atuonwu later channelled his love for reggae into creating reggae songs with gospel lyrics when his life of violence was brought to a halt by his encounter with God.
  • Buchi has five studio albums.
  • Buchi has been married for 24 years.
