Former Super Eagles coach, Clemens Westerhof, has expressed delight at the efforts made by the Nigeria Football Federation to secure an international friendly against the Brazilian national team on October 13, 2019.

Westerhof believes the top-grade friendly is what the Super Eagles need for a good rebuilding process after a bronze-wining display at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. The Dutchman also pointed out that the game slated to hold in Singapore in October will help the three-time African champions find capable replacements for retired Eagles captain Mikel Obi, and 2019 AFCON highest goal scorer, Odion Ighalo. Both players called time on their international career after helping Nigeria finish third at the continental showpiece.

After the Africa Cup of Nations [in Egypt], playing against Brazil is good for the Super Eagles… It is important you play top teams when you are starting up again [rebuilding] after the Africa Cup of Nations. When you play top teams, like Brazil, the Super Eagles will know the balance of the team, how they react after the African Cup… They played against Ukraine, which is good. Now against Brazil, you get a tougher test, the manager knows how the Super Eagles play without Ighalo, without Mikel, and how you look for their replacements.

Westerhof is notable for leading the golden generation of the 1994 Super Eagles team which won the 1994 AFCON in Tunisia, and finished in the second round of the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States in Nigeria’s debut outing at the global tournament.
