The UNDP Undergraduate Essay is a program focused on engaging undergraduate students in meaningful discourses relating to taxation, trade, and sustainable development. Participants will be opportune to enhance their understanding of public finance and its impact on the economic, social, and environmental drive towards sustainable development. Top essays from the program will be adapted into policy briefs.

The program focuses on the following themes

  • Exploring the potential of innovative tax policies and strategies to drive sustainable development for progress towards closing the SDG financing gap in Nigeria.
  • Exploring linkages between inclusive and sustainable tax systems on environmental sustainability, digital economy, and trade.
  • Strengthening tax systems to combat illicit financial flows in Nigeria for progress towards closing the SDGs financing gap in Nigeria.

To be eligible for the program

  • The program is open to undergraduate students currently enrolled in reputable Nigerian universities or colleges, studying any course.
  • The applicant must submit a national identification and student identification from their university.
Prizes
  • First Prize: NGN 1,000,000 and a certificate of recognition.
  • Second Prize: NGN 750,000 and a certificate of recognition.
  • Third Prize: NGN 500,000 and a certificate of recognition.

Essay submission guidelines
  • The essays should be between 1,500 and 2,000 words.
  • The essay must be submitted in English.
  • The essay must be typed, double-spaced, and submitted in PDF.
  • The essay must be original and unpublished. Plagiarized essays will be disqualified. The use of AI is prohibited.
