  Applications are open for the 2025 Africa Development Bank-Japan Africa Dream Scholarship program, which aims to enhance the capacity for human resources in Africa.

The scholarship is an initiative of the Africa Development Bank (AFDB) in collaboration with the Japan Africa Dream Scholarship (JADS) to enhance human resource capacity and keep to the AFDB’s five strategic priority areas:
  • Feed Africa
  • Light up and power Africa.
  • Industrialize Africa
  • Integrate Africa
  • Improvement of the quality of life of the African people.
Nationals of African Development Bank member states with proven relevant professional experience and record of supporting developmental efforts in their countries and set to undertake graduate degree programs in energy development and related fields are the program’s target.

To be eligible for the program

  • You must be a citizen of an AFDB member state.
  • The applicant must be 35 years of age or less.
  • The applicant must hold a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in energy, agriculture, health, environmental sustainability, engineering studies, or related fields with excellent academic records, relevant professional experience, and a history of supporting your country’s development efforts.
  • You must have at least one year of paid employment in your home country or another African country after receiving your bachelor’s or equivalent degree within the past 3 years.
  • The applicant must be living and not working outside their home country.
  • The applicant must not be already enrolled in a graduate degree program.
  • The applicant must not be an Executive Director, his/her alternate, and/or staff of all types of appointments of the African Development Bank Group or a close relative of the aforementioned by blood or adoption, with the term “close relative” defined as mother, father, sister, half-sister, brother, half-brother, son, daughter, aunt, uncle, niece, or nephew.
  • The applicant must agree to return to his/her home country to contribute to economic and social development after completing the scholarship program.

Awards

  • The provision covers full tuition.
  • Fellows are awarded 140,000 JPY per month, which covers living expenses (amount subject to change).
  • Provision for economy-class air travel between the home country and APU at the beginning and end of the program
