Every forward-thinking organization has a department for research and development because just as humans, ideas, concepts and organizations have to continue to develop in order to remain relevant to solve problems as they come.
Facebook Inc. is a social networking company that builds technologies to give people the power to connect with friends and family, find communities and grow businesses. It was founded by Mark Zuckerberg and his college buddies in 2004. As a culture, Facebook is constantly iterating, solving problems and working together in order to fulfil its mission – connect people all over the world. In order to do this, there is a need to make better decisions, build better products and create a better experience for people all over the world; these three are embedded in the research itself.

As part of its development as a company, Facebook recently announced the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Residency Program (FAIR). The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Residency Program is a one-year research training position designed to give hands-on experience with artificial intelligence research while working in Facebook AI.
The AI Residency experience is designed to kickstart a career in the field. This is a full-time program that cannot be undertaken in conjunction with a university study or a full-time job. It prepares individuals for application to top graduate programs in Machine Learning and offers the possibility of an interview for a full-time position at Facebook Inc.
The Program
The Residency program is only offered for 12 months which comes with a competitive salary and an opportunity to work in a Facebook office for the period of the residency.
The program pairs individuals with an AI Researcher and Engineer who will both guide the project. With the team, individuals pick a research problem of mutual interest and then devise new deep learning techniques to solve it. Collaborations are also encouraged beyond the assigned mentors. The research will be communicated to the academic community by submitting papers to top academic venues (for example, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, ICCV, ACL, EMNLP, etc.), as well as open-source code releases and/or product impact.
Criteria
People who have a strong technical background and are passionate about AI research.
Prior experience in machine learning is certainly a strength but people from a diverse range of backgrounds, including areas ostensibly unrelated to machine learning such as (but not limited to) math, physics, finance, economics, linguistics, computational social science, neuroscience, and bioinformatics are also welcome.
Responsibilities
- Learn how to perform research in deep learning and AI.
- Understand prior work and existing literature.
- Work with mentors to identify problem(s) of interest and develop novel AI techniques.
- Translate ideas into practical code (in frameworks such as PyTorch).
- Write up research results in the form of an academic paper or open-source projects.
