You would be surprised by how many ailments can be prevented from good hand hygiene. It is so important to wash your hands, that at the just concluded World Health Day this year, the WHO’s tagline was ‘Save Lives: clean your hands’ . The WHO was sending this message specifically to Medical practitioners to reduce the rate of infection in hospital, clinics and even pharmacies but I think the message applies to everyone.
Unfortunately, most of us don’t seem to either understand the importance of hand washing or sometimes, even know how to wash our hands properly. So here are the steps to washing your hands properly:
1. Put a bit of soap or liquid hand-wash in your palms and rub until it produces a fine lather. If it doesn’t lather, rinse and start again.
2.Rub soap and lather into and around palms with fingertips.
3.Work soapy fingers in between each other back and front.
4.Take care to soap thumbs individually.
5.Move fingernails back and forth across palms to dislodge possible dirt under them. If dirt is particularly stubborn, work the nail of your thumb under each fingernail in turn.
6.Rinse hands properly and dry preferably with a fresh paper towel.
Wash your hands as often as you can but especially after using the bathroom and just before meals. Let us adopt good hand hygiene and in the eternal words of Michael Jackson, ‘Heal the World’.
