Payday is almost here. It’s a good time to grab some popcorn with a few friends and watch something profound (so that you can argue about it later), or maybe just have a few good laughs. Here’s a list of 4 movies you can watch with your friends this weekend.
Love is War
Mr & Mrs. Phillips are both candidates in the upcoming governorship elections of their home state. As the stresses of their individual campaigns increase, tensions rise and the strength of their relationship is put to the test. Will their love survive the politicking? The film may also be an attempt to make more important points about the perception of female and their ambition in politics in Nigeria. What would you say about a woman who risks the unity of her family for politics? Your answer may tell you a lot about yourself.
Omoni Oboli is Mrs. Phillips, and Richard Mofe-Damijo is Mr. Phillips. The film was co-produced by Dioni Visions Entertainment and Inkblot Productions. The screenplay was written by Chinaza Onuzo (screenwriter of The Arbitration and The Set Up).
Farming
Based on a true story of popular British actor, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Farming shows us the early life and struggles of a young Nigerian man who was given to a white family when he was six weeks old. The practice was common in 1960’s Britain among immigrant Africans and Nigerians who had arrived in the country for work or studies. Hopefully, this film will be able to carry the weight of the story it is trying to tell.
Damson Idris, an upcoming British-Nigerian star, plays the part of Eni (a character based on Adewale). Genevieve Nnaji and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje appear as Eni’s mother and father respectively: two students who, by necessity, are forced to give their child away so that he can have a better life. The film was written and directed by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. Adewale spoke to Reuters at the Nigerian premiere in Lagos last weekend, saying:
“I’m hoping that it [Farming] will create a dialogue and a collective therapy for those that are still suffering.”

The Herbert Macaulay Affair
Few Nigerians are aware of the incredible impact Herbert Macaulay had on the development of Nigeria. In truth, there are some who believe he was a white man. This film by Imoh Umoren steps into the gap and fills it with a storyline that explores some of the uproar and excitement that Herbert Macaulay caused in his lifetime. Our hope for this film is that it will not just entertain, but will provide some historical insight as well.
Imoh Umoren is an experimental independent filmmaker. In simpler terms, Umoren approaches the art of filmmaking with unconventional methods. The result is often striking. His projects have been nominated for several awards and won some. Considering the importance of the subject matter in this new film, The Herbert Macaulay Affair may just be his best work yet.

Elevator Baby
Dare is a young man with a privileged background who has probably spent most of his life sheltered from the realities of a less-privileged world. With work and big plans for the future on his mind, being trapped in an elevator with a semi-literate pregnant woman is the last thing he needs. This is where we find him in Elevator Baby. Timini Egbuson (Dare) and a very pregnant Toyin Abraham spend a few hilarious hours together in a faulty elevator in this new film. Of course, as soon as you hear that Toyin Abraham is in a film, you know that your ribs are in trouble. Timini Egbuson is also very good at tickling audiences with his reactions and adorable frustrations. You can expect some good laughs from Elevator Baby.
The icing on the cake is that this film was produced by Niyi Akinmolayan, one of the most relevant and entertaining filmmakers in what some Nigerians are starting to call New Nollywood. We suspect that Niyi has the Midas touch since most of his projects turn to gold.
