Here are the  reasons why you need to choose water over soda in your everyday nutrition:

Hydration

As a healthy human being, you are programmed to lose about 8 cups of water to sweat and urine in a day. If you do not drink enough water, you are likely to suffer from headaches, dry mouth, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, and muscle cramps because of dehydration. Adults and children who do not drink the recommended amount of water each day will experience these symptoms. Even though soda is liquid, it does not replace the water used up in your body. Instead, it speeds up urine production and leaves you dehydrated. You would have to drink an extra glass of water for every can of soda you consume in a day.

Excessive Weight Gain

Not only does an average of 12 ounces of soda contain caffeine, it also contains about 150 calories that come mostly from sugar. Imagine if you take a can of soda every day in a month, that means you will consume 4000 calories. If you consistently take soda for a long period of time, it would lead to weight gain, and you would begin to suffer from the health complications that accompany such a weight gain from excessive sugar.

Diet sodas are not good for you as regular ones. This is because they contain extra artificial sweeteners that wake up in you an intense craving for more sweet food or drinks. Eventually, when you give in to the cravings, you would only have increased calorie and sugar intake. However, unlike soda, water has proven to be helpful for maintaining a healthy weight. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics discovered that people who take a glass of water just before they start their meals are likely to eat about 75 calories less than those who do not. Water has no sugar, nor calories, or added preservatives. And more on the plus side, water does not make you start craving other unhealthy drinks.

Healthy Gums and Teeth

Soda has sugar and acid that do no good to your teeth. The sugar in sodas increases the bacteria in your mouth, and the acid breaks down the enamel on your teeth. This breaking down of the enamel leaves your teeth susceptible to cavities and decay. On the other hand, water contains fluoride which helps to strengthen and protect your teeth. Trying to cut down on your intake of soda might appear impossible to achieve. It will only take a while to convince your body that what you need the most is less sugar and caffeine. You could start slow and allow your body to settle well into the routine of drinking water and visiting the bathroom to urinate. Also, you could get an accessible water bottle to develop the culture of staying hydrated. Featured Image Source: Medical News Today
