  The interim coach of the Nigerian national team Augustine Eguavoen has stated that the Super Eagles has what it takes to become African champions for the fourth time in Cameroon where the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations is slated to hold from January 9 to February 6, 2022.

Eguavoen who played for the national team and handled the side to a third-place finish at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations was appointed to lead the team on an interim basis after German tactician, Gernot Rohr, was shown the exit door by the Nigeria Football Federation on Sunday, December 12, 2021. In an interview with Brila FM, Eguavoen stated that the 2013 AFCON champions who are placed in the Group D of the tournament alongside Egypt, Guinea-Bissau, and Sudan, can conquer Africa despite the short time frame left to prepare for the tournament.
“Yes. You don’t go to war without thinking about winning. We have to also take it step by step. Most teams going to the AFCON there aspire to win it. But we have to take it a game at a time,”
