About IIASA

The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) is an independent, international research institute with National Member Organizations in Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe. Through its research programs and initiatives, the institute conducts policy-oriented research into issues that are too large or complex to be solved by a single country or academic discipline. This includes pressing concerns that affect the future of all of humanity, such as climate change, energy security, population ageing, and sustainable development.

About The IIASA Young Scientists Summer Program

Annually, from 1 June to 31 August, IIASA hosts up to 50 doctoral students from around the world in its Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP). There are currently six IIASA research programs carrying out research into the dynamics of global change. These programs use holistic approaches and effective, interdisciplinary collaborations to identify the multiple solutions needed to bring about a global transformation to true sustainability. The program areas are:
  1. Advancing Systems Analysis.
  2. Biodiversity and Natural Resources.
  3. Economic Frontiers.
  4. Energy, Climate, and Environment.
  5. Population and Just Societies.
  6. Strategic Initiatives.

Eligibility

The program is designed for PhD students (ideally about 2 years prior to receiving their PhD) working on a topic compatible with ongoing research at IIASA and a wish to explore the policy implications of their work. Participants will be working under the direct mentorship of an experienced IIASA scientist in a unique interdisciplinary and international research environment. They will produce a paper (serving as the first step towards a publishable journal article) and will get the opportunity to build up contacts for future collaboration within the institute’s worldwide network. Applicants can choose to work with up to two programs. We strongly encourage contacting the various program representatives and carefully read through all program descriptions before making your decision. Applicants from all countries are welcome, although IIASA gives priority to citizens or residents of National Member Organizations (NMO) countries. Participation in the YSSP is only possible for one summer (however, you may apply several times) and you will need to be present at the institute (i.e. no fieldwork or working remotely) for the full duration of the program. Applications to the 2022 program are now being accepted (closing date is 14 January 2022, midnight CEST). Selection Results can be expected as of 12 March 2022.
