A group of enterprising farmers called the Fresh and Young Brains Development Initiative recently declared their intent to establish 10,000 youth led agric businesses in the country by 2020. This was stated at the first National Youth Agricultural Festival which took place on 19
th March, 2015 in the country’s capital, Abuja.
The group’s ‘Y-Farm project’ was launched with the aim of promoting a youth-led agric business society. This is expected to meet Africa’s long term goals of reducing poverty and increasing active youth participation in the attainment of sustainable agriculture across the continent by 2020.
In a statement made at the agricultural festival, the Chief Executive Officer and founder of the initative, Nkiruka Nnaemego identified Nigerian youths as the driving force of the development of the agricultural sector of the economy.
The Executive Secretary of the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria, Prof. B. Y. Abubakar supported her claim, adding that the improved living standards of youth farmers are as a result of such initiatives. He also believes that the country’s agricultural productivity and food security will be improved soon.
“In Nigeria, farming has been left in the hands of ageing farmers; likewise agricultural research. Since agricultural development is the basic tool of economic development, there is need for more emphasis to be placed on the role of youths in agricultural development.” Abubakar stated.
The initiative recently commenced the ‘My Farm, My Swag’ campaign in line with its project and its objectives to change the image of young persons involved in agriculture as poor and uneducated.
