In addition to the 1966 recommendation, The Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel was also adopted in 1997 to cover teaching and research personnel at the higher education level. Further, the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goal 4 on education, and the dedicated target (SDG 4.c) which recognizes teachers as the key actors in achieving the Education 2030 agenda, validates the need to celebrate teachers. A key significance of the WTD lies in the fact that it serves as the yardstick for accessing the progress made towards the 2030 goal and reflection of measures necessary for implementation in tackling challenges confronting the teaching profession.

Co-convened by UNICEF, the International Labour Organization, and Education International, the World Teachers Day, 2020, celebrates teachers worldwide with the theme “Teachers: Leading in crisis, reimagining the future.” It is a unique opportunity to celebrate the teaching profession in all parts of the globe; access successes recorded, and draw the attention of the globe to the voices of teachers who are at the fore of efforts aimed at achieving the global education target of not leaving anyone behind mindless of societal status. Without a doubt, COVID-19 has significantly added to pre-existing challenges confronting education in all parts of the globe. The globe which is currently at a crossroad due to the coronavirus pandemic needs teachers now more than ever. Teachers must be at the fore of efforts made towards protecting the right of education and guide it into the attendant consequences that accompany the pandemic.
