In addition to the 1966 recommendation, The Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel was also adopted in 1997 to cover teaching and research personnel at the higher education level. Further, the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goal 4 on education, and the dedicated target (SDG 4.c) which recognizes teachers as the key actors in achieving the Education 2030 agenda, validates the need to celebrate teachers. A key significance of the WTD lies in the fact that it serves as the yardstick for accessing the progress made towards the 2030 goal and reflection of measures necessary for implementation in tackling challenges confronting the teaching profession.
