Entries for the WIPO National Intellectual Property Essay Competition are currently being submitted. This contest, which has been thrown open to Nigerian students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, is organised to encourage critical reflection on intellectual property and its role in innovation, arts, culture, economics, and the world at large. It comes on the heels of World Intellectual Property Day, which is marked annually on the 26th of April.

This year, the National Intellectual Property Essay is themed: IP and Music: Feel the Beat of IP. Accordingly, essays from entrants into the competition are expected to examine the relationship between music and Intellectual Property. The essay competition’s topic is “IP and Music: Harnessing Nigeria’s Music Industry for Economic Growth”.
Essays are to consider the effects that a robust music industry, when supported by strong IP laws and implementation, could have on Nigeria’s economy. They should also discuss the obstacles to this, including emerging technologies, and proffer solutions that will enhance IP in the local music industry.

Eligibility
This competition is open to persons who meet the following criteria:
- Essays should be written in English and not exceed 1,500 words (not counting bibliography and references)
- Writing should be in Arial (black) font size 12, with double line spacing, and numbered pages
- Files should be in both Word and PDF formats
- The essay should not include references to the name, school, phone number, email address or other means of identification of the entrant or any other person
- Entries should not be plagiarised or AI-generated
- Submissions must be accompanied by a valid means of identification or evidence of enrollment
