  Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited is calling on scientists and innovators to submit entries for its annual Prize for Science. Doing so gives them a chance to win $100,000. The organization is especially interested in hearing from persons who have achieved breakthroughs and innovations that could help solve some of Nigeria’s most pressing problems.

This year’s NLNG Prize for Science is themed “Innovations in ICT, Artificial Intelligence, and Digital Technologies for Development.” As such, the award will go to persons who are devising ways to apply AI, ICT, and other contemporary technologies to tackle major developmental issues in the country. Note that this prize is open to entrants from Nigeria and elsewhere in the world. The 2025 competition shows a preference for persons working at the intersection of science, modern technology, and socio-economic or developmental concerns specific to Nigeria.

Benefit      

The NLNG Prize for Science awards $100,000 to a winner whose entry is adjudged by a panel to have the best balance of innovation, effectiveness, and national importance.

Eligibility

This prize is open to persons who meet the following criteria:
  • Scientists who leverage AI, ICT and digital technologies to solve problems closely tied to economic development
  • The work referred to in the entry must be innovative and advance knowledge and scope of application for AI and digital technology
  • Should be a complete scientific work that has already delivered a proof of concept or has recorded positive social impact
  • Members of the Panel of Judges or Advisory Board or their relatives are not allowed to enter the prize; neither are NLNG staff, their family members, or former staff who left the NLNG less than 5 years ago
  • An individual or group is only allowed to submit one entry

    This is a great initiative by NLNG — it’s not every day you see a $100,000 science prize focused specifically on AI and digital tech with real developmental goals in mind. As someone working at the intersection of AI and public sector innovation, I’m especially glad to see the emphasis on proof of concept and actual impact, not just theory. That’s what drives real change. Curious to see whether local innovators will dominate, or if international entries will take the lead. Either way, Nigeria’s tech scene stands to benefit.
