  The Asido Foundation is inviting undergraduates from across Nigeria to enter the Jemila Abubakar Memorial Essay Competition, which it is organizing. If you are a student at a tertiary institution in Nigeria who is passionate about making people more aware of mental health issues, you could get involved in the competition for a chance to win a cash prize.

The Jemila Abubakar Memorial Essay (JAME) competition is organized by the Asido Foundation in the memory of Late Miss Jemila Abubakar, the foundationā€™s pioneer project manager. It takes place annually and is targeted at undergraduates in Nigeria. This yearā€™s edition has the theme, Mainstreaming Mental Health in Nigeria: Barriers and Opportunities. The top 15 participants will be placed in three cohorts and will help with the implementation of Asido Foundationā€™s initiatives across various communities. This will last for three months. The cohorts will be led by the top three winners of the essay competition, who will also receive cash prizes.

  2. Second Prize: ā‚¦150,000
  3. Third Prize: ā‚¦100,000

Eligibility

Persons who want to enter the competition must meet these criteria:
  • Should be an undergraduate of a tertiary institution in Nigeria
  • Must be able to provide evidence that they are students
  • Should sign the Asido Foundationā€™s ā€˜Unashamedā€™ pledge

The Application Process

Participantsā€™ essays should be between 750 and 1,500 words long. They should also attach a scanned copy of a recent passport photograph, proof of their studentship, and a certificate of the signed unashamed pledge (linked here). These should all be emailed to jame.asidofoundation@gmail.com. Note: The body of the email should include the full name, email address, phone number, name of institution, course of study, department of study, and level of study of the entrant.
