The Super Falcons of Nigeria have qualified for the Semi Final of the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations, and will now face Cameroon for a chance at the grand finale.
Nigeria progressed into the AWCON semi-final on the back of a 6-0 win against Equatorial Guinea on Saturday, at the Cape Coast Stadium, Ghana.
Going into the crucial encounter, the Falcons needed a win to advance to the next stage of the tournament and Thomas Dennerby’s girls came very prepared for the Central African side that fell to their knees before the African champions.
Pure brilliance
Francisca Ordega, who bagged the Player of the Match award against South Africa, began Nigeria’s onslaught with a goal in the 10th minute.
Asisat Oshoala, who has been under severe fire from fans for her goal draught through the competition, scored her first goal of the tourney three minutes later.
Oshoala was out to make her naysayers pay for their harsh comments as she netted her brace in the 23rd minute, before completing her hat-trick to give Nigeria a four goal lead at the end of the half.
Three minutes into the second half, Ordega’s brilliant pass set up Desire Oparanozie who drove home Nigeria’s fifth goal.
Equatorial Guinea had had enough, but they could only do so much to withstand the Falcons who put in their sixth goal via captain Chikwelu, to book their spot in the semi-final of the 2018 AWCON.
In the other Group B encounter, Zambia held South Africa to a 1-1 draw, however the Bayana Bayana qualified for the AWCON semi-final on seven points.
Nigeria will meet Cameroon on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, to decide who gets a place at the final showdown.
