The Nigerian Minister of Youth and Sport Development has extended the ministry’s welfare gesture to the mother of late Nigerian footballer, Samuel Okwaraji, who died while playing for the Super Eagles. A cash donation of N50,000 was made to Mrs. Janet, while the matriarch was placed on monthly allowance as done for the mother of late Rashidi Yekini last week. Mr. Dare who was represented by Bamidele Ajayi paid a visit to the Abakpa-Nike residence of the late Eagles star in Enugu State, and donated various food stuffs and provisions alongside the sum of N50,000.

Food items such as rice, semovita, and beverages were donated on behalf of the ministry to the mother of Okwaraji. The Minister stated that the gesture was meant to honour and assist Okwaraji’s mother who is in her old age, and show that the country is fully aware of the sacrifices made by her son who was undoubtedly a patriotic Nigerian.
“I have always been drawn to greatness and I admire people who live their lives to elevate the status of their community and nation. Okwaraji was not just a footballer, he was an icon and great patriot. He was a great professional who redefined football in Nigeria with many young talents benefiting from his ingenuity and sacrifices by re-writing our country name in gold in world football.”

Mr. Patrick Okwaraji, the eldest son of the Okwarajis while responding on behalf of the family regretted that their mother was indisposed to receive the gifts, but thanked the Minister and the entire ministry, noting that several attempts have been made to get assistance from the government since Okwaraji gave up the ghost.
“Sam died almost 30 years ago. Everybody would appreciate, if they feel he is worthy to be remembered and appreciated for the little contributions he made even as he died in his prime.”
