Her success in this niche is partly due to the resurgence of the natural hair movement. More African and African American women are choosing to go this route. Many of them draw inspiration—and get useful hair tips –from influencers like Chizi. Chizi was born in the United States to Nigerian parents. But she says she’s enthusiastic about Nigerian culture. She has a grasp of Igbo (her parent’s language), and sometimes pulls off a ‘Nigerian accent’ when she’s being humorous. She occasionally visits the country too. There’s some familial root to her involvement with the natural hair movement as well. At some point in the past, she complained to her father about the effects that relaxers were having on her hair—it was dry and always breaking. He suggested that she cut her hair and start all over with it. Chizi took his advice and has been on a natural hair journey ever since.

She started her YouTube channel in 2008. Many of her videos cover ideas for hair maintenance; some are reactions to comments about natural hair regimens made by well-known people. There’s material from other aspects of her life too, including her experiences around weight loss, skin care, and eye treatment. Chizi’s YouTube channel currently has more than 500,000 subscribers. On Instagram, she’s garnered well over 100,000 followers. These audiences consist principally of African and African American women and natural hair enthusiasts. Beyond those basic characteristics, her followers and subscribers are quite diverse and spread all over the world. There’s a widely held belief that it’s expensive to maintain natural hair. This assumption discourages many women from going down the natural hair path. Chizi admits that concerns about costs are valid, but she insists that keeping natural hair over the long term doesn’t have to be expensive. As far as she’s concerned, it all comes down to knowing what products to use (typically just a few) and sticking to them if they work. Chizi notes that running a successful YouTube channel is hard work. But she says she’s not quitting her content creator and influencer roles because she loves what she does. She also advises anyone interested in becoming an influencer in the hair niche to “just start.” According to her, they’ll learn the ropes along the way, like she’s done.
