Nigeria Football Federation President, Amaju Pinnick, may see himself become the next acting President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), following the ill that has befallen the current head of the continental football governing body in Paris.
The CAF President, Ahmad Ahmad, was arrested in France on charges of corruption and financial misappropriation involving a French company.
If the issues facing Ahmad persist, Pinnick, who is the CAF first vice president, will be obligated by CAF’s bylaws to assume the presidency for an interim period of four months before summoning an elective extraordinary meeting.
The NFF boss was appointed the CAF first Vice-President in July 2018, after erstwhile President of the Ghana Football Association, Kwesi Nyantakyi, resigned from office in June 2018, following a covert exposition of corrupt activities within the GFA.
As a result of the current happenings, Pinnick is expected to act according to the ordinance of the football governing body and assume running of the federation in the absence of Ahmad.
According to a section of the CAF bylaws:
“If the President ceases exercising his functions on a permanent basis the first Vice President shall assume the presidency, and shall be obliged to convene an Extraordinary General Assembly, in accordance with these Statutes. The Extraordinary General Assembly shall elect a new President, within a period not exceeding four (4) months from the time the office of President becomes conclusively vacant.”
