NGOs and corporations worldwide recognized the month as Pink October, while the campaign spread across the pink week (October 4th – 6th, 2022). The event was launched with a series of virtual and in-person events. It served as a period of reflection on the causes and prevention of the deadly disease. Several women across the globe have battled this illness, and all that is needed is support and enlightenment to help others fully understand the intricacies of the disease. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, this year’s focus was RISE. A move to Rally In Screening Everybody. The campaign aims to ensure every woman gets the chance to get screened.

Over the years, one of the greatest challenges of women is to bring themselves to get tested. This is probably due to the presumed stigma that comes with the disease. Most women with breast cancer are often discriminated against. This has led to denial and fear of getting tested. However, this year’s focus is to encourage women of all classes to take proactive steps to curb the disease. Some of the symptoms of breast cancer include a thickening or lump in the breast, an inverted nipple, scaling of the skin, and a change in the size and shape of the breast. There might also be some form of pain, which usually develops gradually. Genetic mutations and distortions primarily cause breast cancer to the DNA. Inherited genes such as the BRCA1 and BRCA2 are more prone to the disease.

The stages of the cancer are grouped from stages 0-4. In stage 0, cancer develops from the ducts. In stage 1, the cancer cells begin to replicate gradually. In stage 2, the tumour becomes 2-5cm long and keeps spreading across. In stage 3, the tumour spreads rapidly to all nymph nodes in the area. However, in stage 4, the bones, liver, lungs or brain become affected. It is impossible to prevent breast cancer. However, there are certain measures that can be put in place to reduce the chances. Reduction in the intake of alcohol, regular exercise, consumption of healthy fruits and vegetables, and regular maintenance check can help mitigate this disease. With the RISE focus, this year’s campaign is a wake-up call to all women to prioritize examining themselves. There is no shame in it, as early detection can go a long way to saving lives.
