June 1, 2018, the day the ‘Nigeria Home Shirt’ will be officially launched to the world at 10:00am GMT+1, in NikeTown, London. The Super Eagles kit stunned Nigerians when it was first unveiled by NIKE in February this year. The colors and patterns all speak the NAIJA spirit, and it’s unsurprising the designers could actually pull this off as they studied Nigerian football stars, our history and our ways, while in the conception stages of the design.

But what exactly does the NAIJA Spirit mean to this beautiful design?

According to NIKE:
The word Naija has many uses. As a descriptor, it defines a certain future-focused optimism — one that has catalyzed a new generation of Nigerians to celebrate the nation’s vibrant culture. Use of the word requires attitude, even panache. It isn’t simply a stand-in for Nigeria; instead, Naija reflects a youthful exuberance, pride and fresh perspective on patriotism. To some, Naija translates directly to “the new Nigeria.” With boundless potential and an undoubtedly infectious palpable charisma, the squad begs fandom from anyone — interest in football notwithstanding
The Sportswear giant took the path to connect Nigeria to our past as they drew inspiration from the jersey the Super Eagles team of 1994 wore to their debut World Cup appearance. The home kit carries a familiar badge recolored to honor the ’96 gold medal-winning “Dream Team”, and as usual there is a dominant green color. Nike football design coordinator, Dan Farron told news.nike.com:
With Nigeria, we wanted to tap into the attitude of the nation, we built this kit and collection based on the players’ full identities.” Farron and the design team took out time to learn about Nigerian players and their style “We started to see trends in attitude and energy connecting the athletes to music, fashion and more. They are part of a resoundingly cool culture.
