Nigerian Breweries (NB) Plc is said to have emerged as a top brewer of opportunities for wealth creation in Nigeria creating inroads into agriculture and agro allied services which is engaging over 250,000 people.
The company recently revealed that it has designed a corporate compliance agenda which drives to ensure that 100 per cent of its raw materials are sourced locally. This inevitably contributes tot he growth of local businesses within the agricultural sector, boosting the overall economy.
Through the agriculture/agro allied sector, there is enhanced growth of high yield cassava, Sorghum and some other agricultural products. Its value chain generates raw materials for production of diverse beverages, foods and products.
In line with the NB’s objective of boosting the agriculture and agro allied sector of the economy, with focus on growing high and improved yield sorghum and cassava that the company’s Chairman, Chief Kolawole Jamodu its chairman confirmed the company’s commitment in this regard.
This is in addition of the over 3000 work force employed by the company as well as numerous numbers of others that provide direct and indirect services to the company at its multi strategic locations, including the mega brewery plant in Africa, the Ama Breweries, Enugu state.
Jamodu stated: “We have a commitment to ensure that the vast majority of our bought in materials and services are generated through local sources and to ensure 100 per cent compliance to our supply code procedures in 2013. We strengthened and sustained our sorghum value chain programme through the commercialization of two hybrid seeds previously developed. We are currently working with local agro allied companies to develop glucose syrup for our operations from cassava towards the slated objective of increased local sourcing.
He added that as part of their local sourcing agenda, 100 per cent of packaging materials requirements are now being fulfilled using local sources. Through the agricultural produces, many Nigerians have secured direct line of employment as well as opportunities for secondary and tertiary service providers which provide direct and indirect services to the retinue of framers linked to the NB’s agriculture/agroallied partnership.
Interestingly, the product from the farm would not only serve the NB, but go a step further to produce market for cassava and sorghum value chains needed to boost operations of many Micro Small and Medium Scale industries(MSMEs), This of course lend credence to the federal governments’ initiative to boost industrialization in the country.
Mr. Nicholas Vervelde, Managing Director/Chef Executive officer, Nigerian Breweries Plc, at the company’s pre Annual General Meeting (AGM) media briefing in Lagos said, it has remained focused on engaging over 250,000 Nigerians in agricultural productions of cassava and Sorghum.
He noted that the mark recorded by the company in agriculture, boost to its different brands, innovations as well as modern acquisitions have sustained it as a leader in the Nigerian brewing sector.
The MD said that the company recorded a turnover of N269 billion and profit of N62.2billion for the 2013 financial year. The audited result showed that turnover grew by 6.3 per cent, while operating profit rose by 11.9 per cent in the 2012 financial year which is a great contribution to the growth of the Nigerian economy.
He further revealed that the company maintained its leadership position in the market in spite of the challenging operating environment in 2013. This was further demonstrated as the company’s operating activities grew by 7 per cent, while profit after tax also grew by 13 per cent, which was further boosted by lower financing cost.
