Prominent Nigerian author, Florence Onyebuchi Emecheta, has passed on. She is reported to have died on Wednesday in London, England.

Emecheta was known for her works which majorly explored the travails of women faced with the challenge of poverty and oppression. Books written by her include The Joys of Motherhood, The Bride Price, Second Class Citizen, and The Slave Girl– all of which portrayed women who were maltreated and discriminated against by a society controlled by men.

In his reaction to the news of Emecheta’s death, Denja Abdullahi, President of the Association of Nigerian Authors, described her demise as a great loss to Nigeria’s literary field. He said she was a rare gem whose works championed the female gender.

Buchi was born in Lagos on July 21, 1944, but lived the greater part of her life in the United Kingdom.
