Today, Nigeria celebrates its armed forces and remembers its fallen heroes. The Armed Forces Day (or Remembrance Day) is marked on January 15 to appreciate the service of the men and women of the army, navy, air force and mobile police force who have put their lives on the line for the sake of the security of the lives of their fellow countrymen.
The date of the celebration is built to coincide with the anniversary of the end of the Nigerian civil war, which reached its denouement on January 15, 1970. Since that war- in which the Nigerian army fought to maintain the unity of the country -its armed forces have been called to duty on several occasions to restore and maintain peace and security within and outside Nigeria’s borders. From international peacekeeping engagements in Liberia and Sierra Leone to the battle against Boko-Haram, Nigeria’s troops have fought to reinstate order and stability on various fronts. They have saved lives, quelled deadly insurgencies, and brought relief to millions of people.
We salute the courage and bravery of our armed forces and remember those who have, in the course of service to the nation, lost their own lives. Their sacrifice has not been in vain; we cannot thank them enough, but we should do the best we can to honour their memory.
