Janeth Okwaraji, the mother of late Nigerian football legend, Samuel Okwaraji has died at the age of 83. The news of her death was confirmed by Patrick Okwaraji, the eldest son of the family on Monday, June 9, 2020. Patrick noted that Nigeria’s Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare, and the Nigeria Football Federation have been informed of the death of the Octogenarian as the family commences plans for her burial.

Late Janeth Okwaraji was a retired school teacher and proprietess, her son, the legenday Samuel Okwaraji, died of heart failure while featuring for the Nigerian national team during a World Cup qualifier match against Angola at the National Stadium, Surulere, on August 12, 1989.

President Muhammadu Buhari in his condolence message delivered through presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, stated that the deceased deserved to be acknowledged for her resilience and nobility despite all the odds she lived through.

The President believes Lady Okwaraji, whose son, Samuel, died in August 1989 while playing for the Super Eagles in a World Cup qualifier, will always be remembered for the sacrifices of the family for the nation.
