Early Life and Adversity Overcome
Awotona was born in Lagos, Nigeria. His father was a microbiologist and businessman, while his mother worked at a local bank. Awotona came from an entrepreneurial family, but his path was drastically altered at age 12 when his father was tragically killed in a carjacking incident. This terrible loss propelled Awotona, his mother, and three brothers to leave behind their lives in Lagos and migrate to Atlanta, Georgia in the United States. Awotona showed an aptitude for technology from an early age. He initially studied computer science at the University of Georgia before switching his concentration to business management. He graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. After college, Awotona gained experience in the corporate world, first working at IBM. He then joined the software startup Perceptive Software in Kansas City as an account executive. This role exposed him to the ins and outs of the software industry and sparked his ambition to launch his own company.

In 2013, while working as a salesman and struggling to schedule meetings efficiently, the spark of inspiration for Calendly was born. Awotona recognized the lack of simple scheduling solutions and solved the problem himself. He poured his life savings into developing an app that streamlined the scheduling process.
