Chika would toe the path of his father (service to Nigeria) but on the sporting front. Chika, a taekwondo professional, made the headlines during the qualifiers of the All Africa Games in 2003. He won bronze in the taekwondo heavyweight category and qualified for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Despite losing his first bout to Pascal Gentil, his father believed in his son’s talent and funded him through intensive training that would make him one of the best taekwondo professionals Nigeria has seen. Chika Chukwumerije by 2008 became one of Nigeria’s stars hopeful for a medal at the Beijing Olympics in China and he did not fail to live up to expectations. After winning a gold medal in the +80kg category of the 2007 All Africa Games, Chika won Nigeria’s third medal at the Beijing Olympics with a bronze medal win against Akmal Irgashev.

Apart from taekwondo, Chika commands an impressive academic record. After attending St. Jude’s Private School, Festac, Lagos, Chika proceeded to the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (2005) where he gained a degree in mechanical engineering. He also represented the school (FUTO) at the University Games on three occasions, winning bronze in 2000, and emerging victorious in the 2002 and 2004 editions (won gold both times). Chika Yagazie Chukwumerije also made the waves as a national champion in 2002 and would go on to hold the title for nine years (undefeated) before losing it in 2011.
