The Office of the Senate President has launched the Made In Nigeria Challenge. The contest aims to promote locally made products as viable alternatives to imported goods and encourage the use of domestically sourced inputs by manufacturers within the country.
Senate President Bukola Saraki says that the Made In Nigeria Challenge should help to identify quality products created largely from local material, which could be touted as proper substitutes to imports by government agencies. The products could also get some backing from investors.
The challenge will run for three months and is open to Nigeria-based manufacturers who create great goods out of locally obtained raw materials.
How to Participate
Make a 45 second to 3-minute video that shows what good/service you’re promoting as a home-made alternative to goods that are currently being imported. The product should be made of up to 70 percent local content.
Note that the video should contain information on whether your business is registered, the number of employees you have, and what you would like the government to help small businesses in Nigeria.
Manufacturers can post the video on social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #MadeInNigeria, and/or send the YouTube video to MIN[@]senatepresident.gov.ng.
Shortlisted contestants will be invited to a roundtable with investors and government agencies, including the Bank of Industry (BOI), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON). This meeting is slated for March and will discuss matters pertaining to improving the ease of doing business in Nigeria, and accord preference to Nigerian manufacturers in the procurement of goods by government agencies.
