From February 28 to March 5, the city of Lagos will have its sights and sounds recreated in theatre performances. Over 500 artists from 40 theatre companies will put on shows in 16 venues, in celebration of the city’s uniqueness. The Lagos Theatre Festival will unfold before an expectant public.
The Lagos Theatre Festival is an annual showcase of theatre performances and programs organized by the British Council. Founded in 2013, the festival sets aside a week in the first quarter of each year to present performing art from Nigeria and the United Kingdom to audiences in Lagos. Last year’s event had over 5,500 theatregoers in attendance.
The 2017 edition of the Lagos Theatre Festival is themed ‘Rhythm of the City’; works to be performed will seek to capture and portray the noises, beats, and language that represent Lagos’s many socio-economic and geographical sections. The six-day festival will include workshops, seminars, training and performances scheduled to take place in different locations across Lagos. Music, drama, spoken word, and comedy performances will be put on by groups from Nigeria, the UK, USA and South Africa.
This year’s festival will begin on February 28 with a half-day symposium to discuss theatre-related issues. The event will be chaired by Minister for Culture and Tourism, Lai Mohammed, and will have speakers from the theater sector in the UK and Nigeria debate the growth needs of Nigerian theater. The venue of the symposium will be the VIP Hall of the National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos.
