The Lagos State Government says it will be launching a digital library in February to make it easier for residents of the state to access educational content. The online library will host materials that could prove useful to students in various stages of education, and provide aids to research and vocational training.

The Special Adviser to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode on Education, Mr. Obafela Bank-Olemoh, while speaking about the library last week said that the online platform will have “over 1,600 video tutorials and 2,000 study aids on core subjects for primary to senior secondary school, curriculum.” He further explained that the site, Educatelagos.com, would also contain research papers from tertiary institutions in Lagos State, history lessons, vocational training videos, and online courses on coding.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Government on Education has announced that the project’s logo will be produced via a competition which it has thrown open to residents of Lagos. The contest, tagged “Design Our Logo”, will allow participants to design and submit logos for the digital library project. The winning design will be used for the project, and the designer who comes up with it will win a laptop.

According to the competition guidelines given by the Special Adviser, participants are to submit their logo designs via email to logo@educatelagos.com on or before Friday, February 17, 2017. This will be followed by an announcement of shortlisted logos on Monday, February 20, 2017. Designers whose logos are shortlisted will garner support from friends to like and retweet photos of their works which will be posted on the Special Adviser’s twitter handle. The logo with the highest number of likes and retweets by 8PM, Monday February 27, 2017, will win the competition; the winning entry will be recognized at the launch of the Educatelagos digital library.

  • A physical library would be better accessible by students. Digital library limits access to those who can afford internet. Think of the rising cost internet and the low cost schools in Lagos who have a right to information. A physical library could double as a work space/virtual office which will be more affordable than what is obtainable right now. It can serve as a venue for educational and cultural exhibitions. As a research center for not only students but professional/working class. I’m sure Ambode or the State Minister of Education has visited The British Library, London, UK. If they haven’t, they should.
