The State Government disclosed on Tuesday that it will be setting up 500 coding centres in private and public schools, as part of its plans to teach coding to people in the state. The centres will be run under the CodeLagos initiative, a plan to have a million residents of the state learn to code by 2019.

Speaking at a press conference in Alausa on Tuesday, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Education, Obafela Bank-Olemoh, explained that the centres to be established will be set up in schools, public libraries and community centres in the course of the year. According to him, 300 centres are expected to have been set up by April, when the CodeLagos project is due to be launched.

Mr.Olemoh said that the state government would be working with private organizations to establish the coding centres. He added that an agreement had already been reached with asset management form ARM to set up 15 centres in low income schools.

The government of Lagos state styles the CodeLagos initiative as a preparatory project that should ready residents of the state for a future driven by technology. Registration and screening of facilitators for CodeLagos is ongoing.
