The first step towards preparing for a management role is to understand what it takes to be a manager and also the requirements that make successful management. If you are preparing yourself to become a Technical Manager, a Team Lead, or a Project Manager, you have to understand the required soft and hard skills. Finally, you have to understand the roles and responsibilities required of the position.
  • Invest In Developing The Required Skills

The next step is to take appropriate courses on management roles. It is very important to master the necessary skills needed for the role. Hence, you have to give your attention to reading books, and listening to classes on various platforms, especially on Coursera and Khan Academy and so on.

Also, there are useful materials on leadership and management on LinkedIn and Harvard reviews. Apart from this, there are various Business Schools across the world. However, moving into management roles requires financial planning. 
  • Shadow Lead

Preparing for management roles requires you to apply practical application and experiences. This is why you must have firsthand experience of the role you desire to fill. Therefore, engaging in shadow leading is one of the best ways to prepare for a management role. This also means watching the person whose role you desire to fill. This will require you to play assistantship duties so that you can watch him/her execute the required roles and responsibilities demanded of the position. Discover the skill-sets s/he possesses, what leadership or management school s/he had attended to perform adequately for the role etc.
  • Network With Right The Persons

Preparing yourself for a management role requires you to network with experienced managers and learn from them.

The next step is to express your interest in management roles. Meet the right persons and inform them that you desire to fill certain roles. Moreover, you have to look at opportunities for openings for leadership and management roles.  The best way to get them to trust you with leadership or managerial role is to articulate what you intend to bring to the table. Also, your employer can even help you appreciate what the role involves and might work out a succession plan for you when he sees your genuine interest.
