Companies should normalize physical activities in the workplace as it is relevant to employees’ health, well-being, and quality of life. Physically fit employees are healthier and will require less sick leave, this will, in turn, lower healthcare costs incurred out of the organization’s budget. An employee maintaining a good exercise regimen whilst working tend to be mentally capable of high productivity. This is because the best results are given by healthy workers. Studies have shown that physical activity is connected to enhanced cognitive processing, hence, a sign of its fundamental role in productivity and performance. Physical health is positively correlated with higher levels of concentration, increased mental stamina, reduced levels of stress, improved learning and sharper memory, and improved levels of focus and creativity.
Unfortunately, not all Nigerian organizations seem to be very invested in introducing exercises to the workplace. Regardless of this reality, employees can use these easy ways to incorporate movement and exercise into their workday without getting on the nerves of the boss.

Use the stairs
If you work in a building having both elevator and stairs, opt for the latter. Throughout your workday always find ways to use the stairs. You can also take breaks to run up and down a few flights of stairs. This will help increase your heart rate, burn a bit of calorie, keeping you fit and alert at work.
Aside from run-ups on the stairs, you can take a pause at work to walk around the building or walk outside, provided the weather is permitting. Take a breather of fresh air, and move your body at intervals. This little exercise can put you on focus and re-energize. Supposing you have your hands full with work, you can multitask working and exercising. For example, you can take walks while returning phone calls or participating in conference calls. Do not eat at your desk, walk out to get your food. You can also incorporate regular stretches at your desk. Replace the regular emails and text messages communication with physical meetings.

Use the in-house gym
Although this is rare, some companies have onsite fitness facilities for their workers. They may be entirely free for or include membership subsidized rates for interested workers. Make use of this opportunity as much as possible. You can resume earlier than the usual opening hours and leave later to take short exercises at the gym. This tactic is more convenient and time-saving, particularly for executives.

Replace the bike
Don’t depend on the car or public transport all the time. The time spent on the traffic is very detrimental to both the physical and mental health of workers. On days, you should ride a bicycle as a transport alternative – that’s if the location of work is close by and roads are not main roads.

In the absence of a local league, Introduce inter-departmental competition
