GitHub – the developer’s company, home to over 85 million code repositories used by some 28 million developers worldwide, has announced two new features for its code hosting platform: Unlimited free private repositories and changes to its Enterprise offering.
Microsoft acquired the company late last year for $7.5 billion. Ever since the merger was concluded, the company has been reeling out a lot of new features. The code hosting platform will now offer unlimited private repositories for all free users. Before the update, free users could only host their projects in public repositories, and those who needed a private repository had to pay. But now, GitHub Free allows all users to own unlimited private repositories. The only caveat is that the free private repos only permit three collaborators per project.
The developer community worldwide greeted the news with excitement (as seen on Twitter) especially as some of them had migrated to GitLab – another code hosting service that offers free private repos after Microsoft announced its GitHub merger. Some of the escapee developers mentioned they were moving their projects back due to the new development.
As part of its new slew of changes, GitHub Developer is now called GitHub Pro. Users of the developer package will now see a PRO badge on their profile page. The Pro offering includes unlimited collaborators for private repositories and advanced code review tools for private and public repositories.
GitHub’s Enterprise’s new product is a fusion of Enterprise Cloud and Enterprise Server. Organizations that employ GitHub’s Cloud and Enterprise services can now access both at one per-seat price.
