Nigeria bullish striker, Emmanuel Emenike, will miss this summer’s 2014 World Cup qualifiers and the FIFA Confederations Cup due to a knee injury.
On returning from a lengthy injury layoff, the 2013 AFCON Golden boot winner picked up the injury while playing for his club, Spartak Moscow in a Russian league fixture.
The Spartak Moscow medical staff has ruled him out of action for two months.
This simply means that Emenike will be missing when Nigeria tackles Kenya on June 5, and Namibia a week later on the road to 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
Nigeria currently sits at the summit of Group F on goal difference, ahead of Malawi as the race to the football mundial reaches its apogee.
According to BBC, Emenike said, “It’s a terrible setback for me because I was very happy to be back playing again on Sunday.
“I know injury is part of football but sometimes you struggle to understand why it happens so soon again after recovering.
“Our team doctor is confident I will be back playing again after two months, hopefully I can return stronger and better.”
Emenike refuted claims that he plans to close the curtain on his International career after a recent spat with Super Eagles team coach Stephen Keshi.
“I’m only looking ahead to the road to recovery. It’s very important to stay healthy for a club that stood by me.” he said.
“There is no point talking about other distractions, the weeks ahead will be very important for me and I want to focus on getting better.”
