So you’ve emptied your eggs of their content and made good use of them. All you have left are the shells. You’re going to throw them away, as usual. Maybe, you shouldn’t.

There are a lot of ways those shells could still serve you. They’re useful, even if they won’t end up in your mouth (there’s a possible surprise waiting on this one). Here are some uses for those eggshells.

Make Chicken Feed

You could crush the shells and feed them to your chicken. It’s a great source of calcium for them. While there’s the mindboggling part of having to feed an animal with something that’s come out of it, eggshell feed does the job of strengthening your chicken’s bones better than most alternatives.

Deter Pests

The sharp, jagged pieces of eggshells are a deterrent for snails and worms, which aren’t given to crawling around sharp bits. If you’d like to keep them off your farm or garden, eggshells are the way to go.

Add Them To Your Food

You read that right. It turns out that eggshells are edible. Of course, you’d need to boil them before crushing, to cut the risk of salmonella poisoning. But after boiling and grinding them, you can add them to a variety of things—coffee, yoghurt, smoothies, etc.

Add Them To Compost

As we’ve already noted, these shells are rich in calcium. They could add a lot of it to your crops; tomatoes appear to really need these shells.

Plant Seedlings

Here’s another way in which eggshells can benefit your farm. If you don’t have time for plastic or paper starters for small seedlings, you may try eggshells. Just wash their insides, fill them with dirt, place your seedlings in them.

Final Words

Eggshells can do you a world of good. Try using them for one of the purposes we’ve listed here, and be grateful that they’re good for something. Featured Image Source: Well And Good
