Gombe State used to be an emirate under the Sokoto Caliphate in the pre-Nigeria era and part of the Bauch post-independence. Though Fulani is the most predominant language spoken in Gombe, other languages and tribes coexist here. Such as Tera, Bolewa, Kanuri, Hausa and Tangale. Gombe has produced some notable people, like the novelist Helon Habila, minister of communication Isa Ali Patanmi, former minister of environment in Nigeria, and UN Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Amina Mohamed amongst others.
