The company straddles the healthcare and Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industries. This says something about its mission: Wemy is working to democratize access to quality hygiene for the large segment of the Nigerian population that needs this service. That includes children, women, and the elderly. Wemy Industries was founded in 1978 by Ademola Odunaiya and Aderonke Odunaiya (his wife, who is now late). But the company didn’t begin operating until 1981 when it became the first manufacturer of diapers in West Africa. Over time, it has diversified its offerings to include panty liners, baby wipes, and underlay pads. It has also expanded considerably within the period, moving factory locations multiple times until it settled for its present location in Alapere Ketu, Lagos, in 1990. There are also factories for underlay-towel pads and baby wipes. The baby wipes and diapers from Wemy Industries come under the brand name ‘Dr. Brown’. They are available in various sizes. The baby diapers have 50 sheet and 120 sheet packages, and the diapers are packaged in mini, midi, and maxi offerings. Adult hygiene products generally fall under the ‘Nightingale’ label. They include nursing care pads, underlay towel pads, maternity pads, and adult diapers.

More recently, Wemy has also commenced the production of medical and surgical disposable facemasks. The company owes its success to its strong branding, and its grasp of the Nigerian market. It has also relied on distributors to bring its products closer to final consumers all over the country. Wemy is open to taking on new distributors and has provided a form that people can fill if they want to work in this capacity. Meanwhile, customers in Lagos can order Wemy’s sanitary products online. There’s a lot of demand for what Wemy provides elsewhere in Africa; the company is aware of this and has a three-phase plan to expand into other parts of the continent. They intend to start with countries such as Cameroun, Togo, and Ghana, before spreading their tentacles to Senegal, Gabon, The Gambia, and eventually to Eastern and Southern Africa. Outside of its regular business operations, Wemy Industries is actively engaged in CSR projects. One of them, the Wemy Entrepreneurship Scheme, is dedicated to enabling 1,200 female entrepreneurs to build thriving businesses. Featured Image Source: Nigeria Business Directory
