If you’re a radio junkie living in Lagos, there’s a good chance that you’ve treated yourself to a mid-afternoon ride through feel good music from decades ago on Classic FM. If you’re big on sports and reside in Port Harcourt, you couldn’t possibly miss the delightful football reportage and analysis served up in pidgin by Naija FM‘s jolly-natured sports crew. And there’s Beat FM as well, blasting out contemporary hit tracks through streetside loudspeakers, phones and car stereos, to the delight of many. These radio stations are part of a broadcasting family that’s expanding its dominance of the airwaves over swathes of Nigeria. This family is the brand, Megalectrics. Megalectrics was registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission in 2001, but it operated principally in the telecommunications and broadcasting sectors as a project executor in its first few years. Its rise to public prominence began when its founder and CEO, Chris Ubosi, left a senior position at Cool FM to set up a new media firm. In 2009, he set up three stations-  The Beat FM, Classic FM and Naija FM. These radio stations gained a wide listening rapidly. Since then, Megalectrics has set up more radio stations in Ibadan (Naija FM and The Beat FM) and Port Harcourt (The Beat FM, Naija FM, Classic FM). It has also added another radio station, Lagos Talks, to the original three in Lagos.

Diverse packages, same quality

Each of Megalectrics’ radio stations has a clearly defined style and target demographic. They picked up on an evolving strategy of tailoring radio broadcast to suit specific audiences, and made it into a multi dimensional force that’s captivating large sections of the populations in some of Nigeria’s biggest cities. Beat FM stands out from the array of radio stations on offer as a hit music playing urban lifestyle radio station. It appeals to pretty much everyone who’s a fan of contemporary music, and specifically to younger people. Classic FM plays “all the songs you know,” or, more precisely, all the oldies from a couple of decades before the year 2000 (the type of songs that remind older people about ‘the good times’). Naija FM’s unapologetic pidgin programming also has a large fan base. What makes these outlets so popular is their ability to tap into public concerns and needs, and deliver the right content for the right audience.

A media brand gone international

In 2016, Megalectrics acquired Bang Radio, London, and founded Beat FM London in its place. This move took Nigeria’s vibrant radio entertainment beyond the shores of the country, and defined a significant achievement for the growing Megalectrics brand.
