German industrial giant Bosch says it wants to transform the way artisans in Nigeria work. It points to its new artisanal equipment and solutions center, which it has just opened, as evidence of this. The company says the Bosch Power Box will raise the standard of work artisans do, by providing them with world class power tools; there’s also training available for entrepreneurs from Bosch, for entrepreneurs to raise their skill levels and improve the quality of their output.

In a press release made available on Wednesday, Bosch describes the Power Box as a center providing “a total package” for artisans, who will now be able to buy, lease or rent its tools. The power box is manned by technical staff and trainers, who have been put through the paces by Bosch. Its location at the Amu Wood market in Mushin, Lagos, puts it within the reach of up to 1,500 traders. These entrepreneurs, as well as others across Lagos are Bosch’s targets; the company says it wants to help them transition from the informal sector to the formal, mainstream economy.

According to Dr. Markus Trill, President of Bosch Africa, each Bosch Power Box will also offer courses on product application and safety for individual artisans. Bosch’s press statement quotes him as saying that the Box should help create opportunities “from the ground up” (referring to the micro and small scale businesses it is targeting).

Repayment plans are also available for artisans, through microfinance banks with which Bosch will be collaborating.
