  Engineering startups working on innovative solutions in Africa (and for Africans) are invited to apply for the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation. If you are part of a venture that’s building and deploying solutions in one of a variety of engineering fields, you may consider entering for this prize.

Starting in 2014, the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation has trained, mentored, and provided communications support to 149 businesses in 23 countries. About 71% of this program’s alumni are now generating revenue. They have also raised $39 million in grants and equity.

About 16 shortlisted participants will benefit from this program in the following ways:
  • Access to technical expertise, business resources, and industry-specific mentorship
  • The tailored training program that will last 8 months
  • Access to a network of expert engineers and business professionals from the UK and Africa
  • Up to ₤25,000 prize money
  • Press coverage and communications support

Eligibility

The Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation accepts entries from applicants that meet these criteria:
  • Early stages of commercializing an engineering solution
  • Solution should be a product, technology or service in agricultural technology, biotechnology, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer science, electrical and electronic engineering, materials science, medical engineering, and any other field of engineering
  • Must have strong potential for replication and scale-up
  • The solution will bring environmental and social benefits to people living in sub-Saharan Africa
