The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has put an end to the All Nigeria Athletics Championship holding in Abuja following protests by the athletes against technical director Sunday Adeleye.

The athletes halted the games after the first day of the event and vowed not to compete until their needs were met by the federation. In reply to this unrest the AFN through the Technical Director have put the championships on an indefinite halt.

The decision we have reached is that the championships is cancelled and we further decided that we are going to select athletes who will represent Nigeria at the All African Senior Athletics Championships.

On Sunday morning, the athletes had put barricades on the tracks of the Abuja National Stadium, demanding a meeting with the AFN board to address poor well-being of the athletes in local and international events and failure to redeem outstanding allowances.

All attempts by the AFN to get the athletes to compete proved unproductive hence the decision to stop the championships. Adeleye explained that some of the athletes had misunderstood the details of the welfare arrangements made by the federation.
