CNBC’s List of the World’s Top 300 FinTechs

CNBC, a leading global media outlet for business news and analysis, has featured 5 Nigerian companies on its list of the top 300 FinTechs for 2025. The Nigerian companies that appear on CNBC’s Top 300 FinTechs are Opay, Palmpay, Moniepoint, PiggyVest, and Interswitch. It placed them in the midst of such heavyweights as PayPal, Mastercard, Binance, Stripe, and Visa, which are also on the list.

Nigeria accounts for half of the African FinTechs on CNBC’s list, with startups from Egypt, Kenya, and South Africa also included.

Compiled in collaboration with Statista, The World’s Top FinTech Companies: 2025, as published by CNBC, is the culmination of a process that commenced in February. It began with a call by the media firm to FinTechs from across the world to request consideration for a place on its list.

Besides the companies that honoured the call, CNBC and Statista also reviewed another 2,000 businesses to “ensure a broad representation of names within the sector”. According to the publishers of the list, their assessment of eligible companies was based on specific KPIs. Those indicators include revenue, growth, and employee headcount, among others.

The companies that cut represent 7 segments of FinTech: alternative finance, digital assets, enterprise FinTech, InsurTech, neobanking, payments, and WealthTech.

Four of the five Nigerian companies on the list are in the payments segment. PiggyVest is the only Nigerian (and African) business recognised in the WealthTech category.

The United States has by far the largest number of FinTechs in the global top 300, with about 126 of the listed companies headquartered in that country. This demonstrates the dominance of the US in financial technology and mirrors its economic vibrancy and leadership in innovation.

The United Kingdom, Singapore, India, Canada, Germany, Brazil, the Netherlands, Israel, and France are the other countries in the top ten (in that order) in terms of the number of companies they contribute.

Somto Ifezue, CEO of PiggyVest, said this about his company’s inclusion on CNBC’s list of the world’s top FinTechs:

“This recognition highlights our continued impact in making saving and investing simpler and more accessible.”
