Law Abiding
This is the first virtue of a patriotic citizen. The constitution of every nation is the supreme document guiding citizens on how to conduct themselves. Nobody (regardless of political, economic, or social status) is above the law. Disregarding the constitution may lead to anarchy. The best thing you can do for your country is to be a law-abiding citizen.Putting Country First
America is not the greatest nation on earth by magic, but rather in the belief of its citizens that America is not about what it can do for citizens, but about what citizens can do for the country. Nigerians must put the country first in everything, whether in public office, by ensuring that everyone, regardless of their status, follows a queue or by refusing to collect bribes and deliver efficient public service. Putting the country first means citizens’ actions do not hurt present and future generations. A good citizen should always think about ways to better his country.Sign up for the Connect Nigeria daily newsletter
Voting and Engaging in National Discourses
Voting is the civic right of citizens and the bedrock of democracy. Patriotic citizens participate in the voting exercise, ensuring they vote for leaders of their choice. If one refuses to vote, it simply means that one cares less about the future of one’s nation. Engaging in voting and national discourse for a better nation indicates that you are patriotic and care deeply about your nation.Tolerance and Respect for Diversity
Nigeria is multi-ethnic and religious, as such, citizens from different parts or regions of the country are bound to have diverse views about national topics. Being a good citizen means tolerance and respect for divergent views and seeking favourable solutions for all parties. Patriotism frowns at shutting down an opinion because it goes against your beliefs or ethnic affiliation. It is not about who is right or wrong, but about building a greater nation.Register to attend the CN Business Mixer
Service to the Nation
A patriotic citizen does not need to be in the military or occupy political or public offices to serve the nation. Service to the nation can come in the form of organizing sensitization programs in rural communities about educating fellow citizens on the need to vote in an election. You can serve the nation by donating to charitable courses. Service to the nation has no economic boundaries; little acts can make a big difference in the lives of fellow citizens.Got a suggestion?
