Connect Nigeria was at the WoWe 2014 press conference which was set up by Tori Abiola, the Managing Director, WoWe 2014 in Lagos on the 4th of June, 2014 with three other women speakers who joined her in speaking to the journalists present about why women entrepreneurs should be a part of this year’s conference.
Mrs. Ononuju Irukwu, Director, Chapel Hill Denham and one of the speakers of this year’s WoWe conference explained why WoWe is a great platform for women entrepreneurs stating, “At WoWe 2014, we want to reach women from the ages of 20 -70. We say 20 because if we can start now by teaching them the things they need to know, they will reach their height of success early, and we say 70 because we can teach them how to make a better life. We need to teach our women how to separate their business and their personal lives so that they can both run concurrently.
WoWe 2014 gives us a great platform to reach our target audiences. It is a fantastic opportunity for us where we can connect with our women. If we teach women to have good habits about money, chances are that they will take that lesson to make a difference in their businesses.”
Mrs. Ejiro Onome Jakpa, Director ODDESSUM/GUONO and a speaker at the W0We 2014 conference said that apart from showcasing her clothing line, GUONO and her beauty line, ODDESSUM, she is excited about meeting women who are defying the odds. She said, “Being a woman owning a business can be challenging. I am therefore looking forward to meeting like-minded women who were not too scared to take the bait and are doing very well in their businesses.”
The third woman speaker for the WoWe Conference, Janet Adetu, CEO Etiquette Consortium spoke about her company and the need for women to learn soft skills and etiquette that is sure to get them ahead in business. She said, “At the WOWe 2014 conference, I will be teaching women the steps they need to project poise, quality and presence. A lot of women may take these things for granted – how well they relate with people, how well they portray themselves and how well they behave and communicate. This is why I think the WoWe conference is a great opportunity for women where we will emphasize some of these qualities and tell some women the things they need to know, master and draw their attention to in order for them to excel.”
Tori Abiola, Managing Director, WoWe 2014 expressed her views concerning women starting up businesses in Nigeria, “More women are starting business in Nigeria than men, but when it comes to access to financial services and recognition by the government, the numbers are not changing so what I would like to do with this year’s WoWe is to make sure these women are taken seriously. WoWe is about women being taken seriously since women entrepreneurs contribute a major part to the growth of the Nigerian economy and as our young women grow up, they should also take themselves seriously. We want to show women that they can do it, that they can really dream big.”
She concludes, “WoWe 2014 targets the urban educated woman who owns a business or is willing to start a business, can afford 35,000 naira and is willing to take her business to the next level. I believe that if we empower that woman, maybe she can hire a hundred, two hundred people and grow her business to a multi-million naira one. WoWe started out because we want to empower our women. I cannot guarantee that this platform will solve the problems of all women, but I can assure you that for those who come and use the information that will be given to them on this platform, they will be better for it.”
