Today, 15th March, is World Speech Day. Speech has power, and only those who understand its power can change the world. It is therefore necessary to set a day aside to celebrate this great tool.

Thoughts For A Better World

This year’s World Speech Day theme is Thoughts For A Better World, and is aimed at showing how the power of speech can change the world, one person at a time. Standing on the shoulders of great speech giants like Martin Luther King Jr, Nelson Mandela, Barack Obama, I pick up my pen as a microphone on this podium to introduce and celebrate World Speech Day.

Pre-colonial origins

Speech-making has been entwined in our blood as a people, far before colonization. It is embedded in the beautiful African rhetoric, an art which uses spoken languages to steer the thoughts of the masses to the desired outcome. With clear messages that arouse the interest of their audience, our forefathers mastered the art of speaking directly with their audience. Yet, many have been held down by the twin shadows of fear and stage fright, and have not risen to speak and allow their opinion to be heard On this note, I challenge every voice to rise up and participate in World Speech Day, by speaking great thoughts that would help shape a better world.   Feature image cover photo: worldspeechday.com
