The Women in Technology in Nigeria (WITIN), a non-governmental organisation has reinstated its commitment to improving technological knowledge acquisition for girls through competition and trainings at incubation centres.
This concern took the center stage as the group recently joined the rest of the world in Lagos to mark this year’s Girls in ICT day, an initiative of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).
The annual event, WITIN said, is a platform to promote the participation of young girls in Information Communication Technology (ICT) as a way of bridging the gap in gender involvement in technologically oriented occupations and businesses, and in enhancing the drive towards achieving a knowledge economy.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Abike Dabiri, representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency, expressed her readiness to work with WITIN in encouraging girls’ involvement in innovative skills through its various programmes such as the mobile apps competition where they are exposed to the development of applications that could solve societal problems.
Dabiri stated that she would work closely with the National Assembly in embarking on programmes that would strengthen girls’ involvement in ICT, and that one of the ways is through developing talents at incubation centres and technology parks within the country.
Chairperson of WITIN, Mrs. Martha Alade in her opening remarks said girls should consider taking up careers in the ICT industry.
